“Breakfast at Tiffany’s”!
The 1961 film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” is a romantic comedy directed by Blake Edwards. The film, based on a book by Truman Capote, won two Oscars and is an incredibly modern “jewel” in itself.
It is impossible not to fall under the spell of Audrey Hepburn. She brightens up the screen in her role as Holly Golightly, a capricious young New York woman who sparkles with elegance, simply loves diamonds and in the end turns out to be very touching in her quest for identity. The character has become a myth, and is remembered as much for her song – “Moon River” – as for her glamorous wardrobe by Givenchy, especially the famous black sheath dress Holly wears in the early scenes of the film as she eats a croissant in front of the display window of Tiffany’s on New York’s 5th Avenue in the early morning.
Years after the film was made, Hubert de Givenchy donated the dress to the French writer Dominique Lapierre, founder of an association for children with leprosy in Calcutta. Auctioned off at Christie’s in December 2006, the dress was acquired by Givenchy and LVMH for over €600,000. This money enabled Dominique Lapierre to open the association’s first school in eastern India. One way to carry on the work of Audrey Hepburn, a woman who devoted a large part of her life to helping poverty-stricken children.
